Steve Reyes Site

Post is late as I did not have access to posting on blog until today. Site chosen for its high foot traffic and possibility for audience interaction.

Really nice to see what you are all thinking about.
In related to your posts I want to remind you that your object should have a performative aspect- meaning that it needs to interact with/ respond to/ change  the site in some way ( open your mind and be ambitious)
Also, and I know it's difficult, try to observe your site deeply before you reach any conclusion of what your work is going to be about.
I hope it helps,

Jen Herrera - Site - Head Spring at Ichetucknee

I chose the head spring at Ichetucknee State Park for my site. It's a little far away, but the spring itself is beautiful and a vital part of the ecosystem. This spring is where the water comes up from the earth and feeds the river. Springs and aquifers are essential to our lives in Florida as a main source of our fresh water. I took some time to photograph it, write a little about it, and did a quick watercolor study.

I also took some video for the sounds of the spring:

Location

I'm thinking the top of the parking garage by SW rec. It's got no cars parked here besides the workers. Very quiet and open. Ironic comparison to the interior which is very closed and loud.

I was thinking of doing a nature park because it's a false sense of nature. humans are the ones that choose what to do with the land. I wanted to show the clash between the urban world and the natural world. the park feels like you are in a forest because you hear the birds and you are surrounded by untouched trees, but at times you can hear roadway noises and can even see some cars/buildings. you can clearly see the path where you're supposed to walk on. I was thinking of making a structure with branches and other natural materials from the park but also adding man-made materials like the reflector seen on the tree in the 3rd picture.

Brianna Ostrowski - Site Location

A site I'm thinking of doing is a laundromat. It was interesting seeing people come and go and how they interacted with the machines. Laundry can be an intimate act yet a laundromat gives no privacy.

Possible location for Social Sculpture

Right behind the Hippodrome is an outdoor stage. I was thinking if I make something interactive, it would be a good spot for people to observe it.

Progression of first project

This was the first button I made. I decided to make the sides only one layer of the cardboard.

The same concept was used for the front frame.
This is the back of the object. it shows the curved back as well as the original object, which is 1/5 in size.

Final project

This shows how I made the buttons work. I  added a folded piece of cardboard inside the button to push it back up and then I wrapped it with tape where I wanted the button to stop.

Project 2 Part 1

My post is going to be a little longer to make up for missing class on Wednesday for Career Showcase. Thanks for letting me be excused because I got several interviews at some great companies!!!

JUNK TIME

Mom and I with 4 acres of junk

So I took my mom down to the junk lady. After about 3 hours of rummaging and ideas that didn't quite pan out.... we found the right junk. An air pump and a hose. Although they look like they came together, the hose was actually from a vacuum. It just happened to have a very close fit.

The device
My first thought was to make an instrument out of it. To get a bucket and run air through it and by using all sorts of junk from the junk lady to make different sounds. Unfortunately I didn't find anything there that I felt was worthy of my project.

My next thought was to make a game out of it. To make a chute that you could drop ping pong balls in and shoot them at targets/ containers. This is still a possibility.

While brainstorming with my sister we came up with the idea of making something similar to a "Wacky waving inflatable arm tube man"! This is what I want to do. See the video below to see what exactly that is.

I have a lot of different ideas for what type of inflatable I can make but I'll save a little for the imagination until class on Monday.

See ya then!

"Junk Lady"

Hey Guys!

This would be a wonderful place to find objects....

Go south on 13th towards Micanopy. After you pass the town of McIntosh, you will see the Junk Lady on the left. It is hard to miss.. 4 acres of junk!

Perfume Bottle 1/26/15

Progress on the perfume bottle sculpture. I spent the end of last week and the entire weekend on it, so I feel it's pretty nearly done. I think it reflects the reference fairly well.

Hello Everyone I hope the project is going well.
I highly recommend taking pictures from the process and not just from the end result and here is a boost for you- a few students' work from the past (I know some of you will find similar work to yours in it)
See you tomorrow,

Sketches and Process: Scaled object

I'm behind at the moment, but I've created a paper mock-up of the main body of my work, and I plan to start on the actual piece as soon as possible.

Room Schedule

Heres the schedule for when the room is open if anyone needs it

Claes Oldenburg

Hi Guys,

Was just thinking of this artist today as you were working on your sculptures. He is listed in your syllabus as an artist to check out! Really awesome to see his work in person!

Snap-Off Utility Knives

Hi everyone,
I forgot to show you how to snap-off the knives so it is mandatory you watch this video before you try it.
Make sure you work safely and properly with any tool you use, and when you snap-off utility knives you have to wear safety glasses.
Enjoy
